Barry’s Black Cloud |Vale| The Star

There’s a devastating, dark black cloud hanging over our town as we say a much too soon goodbye to two of Barry’s best loved characters.

Jermaine Martyn, affectionately, known as Buddha, a handsome and happy man, who was well-loved by all.

And Mike Whyman, that cheeky big-hearted chappy who gave us lots of laughs and larger than life memories.

Buddha, was taken quickly and brutally in a freak incident, that shocked the town to its core.

But saw such an outpouring of love that over £16,00 grand was raised on his Just Giving page within hours. This will help Suzy, Timmy, Trina, and his little boy Elijah.

Mike fought a long, hard, public battle against bowel cancer, becoming an inspiration to us all – especially those struggling with a diagnosis of the words no-one ever wants hear.

He lived life to the full, married Louise, had baby Archie, followed his beloved CCFC, and spent time with his many friends who supported him tirelessly on his journey.

My sincere condolences and love to their family and friends during these dark days.

I never knew Buddha or Mike as well as their loved ones of course, and I don’t pretend to have an ounce of understanding of the rollercoaster of emotions they are going through.

To be honest, I can’t even remember meeting Mike, he’s always been there, always around, and always crossing my path randomly.

The last time I saw him was a few years ago in a pub on St Mary’s Street as we celebrated the obligatory boozy Christmas festivities.

We were both a bit worse for wear, no change there then.

Buddha was king of the Cul De Sac. Always ready with a big smile and wave as he parked his van at the top and strolled down to his Mum’s.

I, like so many, will miss them both.

Once again though, it is a testament to our strong sense of community spirit that, that despite or shock and grief, our big-hearted town has pulled together.

Barry is always at its fiercest when faced with adversity, pulling out all the stops to strongly support family and friends faced with tears and tragedy.

We have certainly lost two of our best and brightest stars.

Life can be unbearably cruel.

Rest in Power Jermaine Martyn

Rest in Peace Mike Whyman
